The View and Paula Deen: Awkward Appearance

Here’s a few questions for you:

  • How do you feel about what is seen in this video?
  • Is finger-licking ever appropriate?
  • What does role model mean to you?

When cookbook author Paula Deen appeared on "The View" on ABC Tuesday, host Barbara Walters lashed out at her for pushing fattening food for children. Deen, a zaftig, Georgia restaurant owner, was on the program to plug her book, "Paula Deen's Cookbook for the Lunchbox Set." "This is a cookbook for kids. Obesity is the No. 1 problem for kids today. Everything you have here is enormously fattening," scolded Walters as she sat by the famous chef.

  1. Notice how she didn't answer any question directly? When the women asked a question she gave them food. If this isn't grounds for creating obesity, I don't know what is. As a person who deal with a weight problem I am incensed by Paula Deen. As a Registered Dietitian who is hyperventiant about food safety I am further incensed.

  3. Carol, thank you for taking time to read and to comment. I found this appalling, too.

We as adults need to take responsibilty for our health and certainly for the health of the truly blameless: our children.

I really don't know what to say about this video except that it left me feeling full of all sorts of unpleasant emotions.

Thanks for bringing this video to my attention and thanks for the great work you do!!

  5. MORE POWER TO YOU BARBARA!!! I can't stand Paula Dean. I mean, is she really that talented? She adds cream and butter to everything, how could it not taste good?! Barbara made an EXCELLENT point, that book is a disaster and I'm glad someone said something!!!

  7. Missed opportunity. When you have an audience and a platform such as Paula Dean had on the View and has in general, all I can say is what a missed opportunity on several levels...to give an inspiring message to kids, to promote healthy eating, to acknowledge that you AREN'T a nutrition expert, etc.

  8. Thank you to everyone for your comments on the above video. In my opinion, how sad and at times like this--devastating to our profession--this situation can be viewed as a travesty. Clearly, as Ms Jill Castle has stated above, this is a missed opportunity, which Barbara Walters could "see." Despite this, it certainly does make the job, much harder for a Pediatric Registered Dietitian (RD) like Ms Castle.

It seems to me to, and again, in my opinion, that Ms Deen needs to fill the lunch-box and fill the book with healthly food, accept and acknowledge that she is not a nutrition expert (ask for assistance from an RD who is) and become an "out-of-the-box" thinker, critical for someone in her role with a public image, and to inspire and guide our children properly and healthfully as a "true role model."
